How we started:
We conceived Outside-the-Box Thinking from the ongoing frustration of special education teachers, specialist teachers, administrators, and general education teachers. Working together, we devised a plan and researched the most effective research-based teaching techniques. We researched ways other schools and countries are giving students what they need. We researched self-reliance, motivation, learning differences, executive functioning, strengths-based assessments, creative problem-solving, critical thinking, disability law, the science of reading, innovation in schools, the science of learning, and entrepreneurship in the K-8 setting.
Our vision is clear: OOTB Thinking recognizes diverse perspectives and experiences as essential. It is through the recognition and encouragement of these different ways of thinking that innovation, community well-being, curiosity, and positive change occur. Through OTB Thinking, young people will cultivate their skills for compassion, empathy, confidence, collaboration, agency, reflection, perseverance, and academic growth. It is through this value of individualized approaches to learning that students will go out and help create a more inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant world.
